ANDREA

After Dr. Avery left, taking the letter with him, I felt a strange sense of what I could only describe as loss.

I had carried that letter all the way from Mississippi to Whiskey Springs. I regretted, now, not opening it.

But now it was too late. And I had no idea what my father had written to Dr. Avery. Or why.

I sat very still after he left. Reed moved over to sit next to me.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I looked into his bluest of blue eyes. I’d been better. But with him here, I had been worse. He took the edge off. Distracted me.

“I should have opened the letter,” I said.

He nodded. “Most people would have,” he said. “But you not opening it makes you special.”

I blew out a breath. “Special, all right.”

Laughing, he put a hand over mine.

That simple touch sent all sorts of shivers through me. Shivers that made butterflies in my stomach go crazy.

“I admire you for it,” he said. “I don’t think I could have done it.”

“Now I feel really stupid.”

“Don’t,” he said. “Dr. Avery seems like a good man. I think he’ll read the letter and let you know what it says. In fact…” He looked at me with consideration. “I think he’d let you read it if you asked him. Maybe even give it back for you to keep.”

“That helps,” I said. “I will. I’ll ask him. It would mean a lot for me to know what my father wanted to say to him. I feel like it must have been important.”

“I agree,” he said.

“How long are you planning to stay here?” I asked. “In Whiskey Springs?”

“I don’t know yet. How long do you think I should stay?”

I’d almost forgotten that he was a rake. But his words reminded me.

“I think that is entirely up to you,” I said.

“You could have something to do with it,” he said.

Bold. Charming. Charming and bold.

My sister Bailey would be a good match for him.

Even as the thought occurred to me, I quickly dismissed it. I didn’t like the way it made me feel. I didn’t want him to court Bailey.

I wanted him for myself.

What did it say about me that I was attracted to a rake?

Just as the clock chimed the hour, Dakota peaked into the room.

“Can we come in now?” she asked.

“Of course,” I said. It was just like Dakota to be the fearless one who would lead the charge for my other three siblings.

Sometimes I think she would have been a good older sister. But then she and I shared a lot of qualities, so one of us may have been about like the other. We were both responsible and serious. She just happened to be suspicious of everything and everyone.

Bailey, Colton, and Elise followed her into the room.

“I should go,” Reed said, letting go of my hand.

“Don’t go,” Colton said. “You can pair up with Andrea to give us three teams.”

I glared at my younger brother, but he appeared to be clueless.

Reed didn’t want to stay here with us and play games.
